"A vision of God is only a vision of the Self objectified as the God of your particular faith. What you have to do is to know the Self." ~ Sri Ramana Maharishi
Ayurvedic or Medical Yoga incorporates not only the medical tradition of Yoga – Ayurveda, but integrates it with the traditional spiritual philosophy (Vedanta) behind Yoga itself, as well as how Yoga can integrate certain Ayurvedic herbs, methods and lifestyles as well as diets into it’s regime.
This is also the original form of Yoga, of which we can call as Vedic Yoga.
Certain breathing techniques, poses and mantras as well as other practices are all based on their Ayurvedic effects on the mind and body, which are quite different to the generic values they are often given in Yoga classes, which are based on Western medicine.
Our Yoga has no “Guru” or “Lineage” as such, and is a synthesis of various teachers and teachings, including Swami Shivananda, Sri Ramakrishna, Swami Ramdeva, Ramana Maharishi, Dr. David Frawley etc. It helps to bring these practices together to reconstruct the original Yoga, as taught by the Rishis or Vedic Seers who created these.
Durgadas has been practising and researching Yoga since very young, and has also gone over the most ancient Yoga texts, not only Yoga Sutras, but the Vedic Upanishads, Hatha Yoga Pradipika, Bhagwad Gita etc. and extracted their “nectar” as it were. Much of modern-day Yoga has itself been modified and distorted, starting back hundreds of years ago by Yogis who began “guessing” the postures mentioned in the texts and ancient teachings (as it was lost for a long time).
Several years ago, a great famous Yogi initiated Durgadas into sacred mantras and Yogic Kriyas (techniques), including darshan or sight of great Rishis such as Babaji (Rishi Yagyavalkya), strongly connected to Shiva. Along with him and Vedic Rishis such as Dattatreya, a famous Yogi-form of Shiva, he has been guided to teach the world the original Yoga as in the shastras (sacred texts), not the modern-day forms of Yoga which have been much distorted.
He hence goes back to the Vedic Yoga, the oldest form of Yoga, of which was a system designed based on one's own practise, realisations and insights into the Yoga tradition, with emphasis on a personalised regime for students, not an en masse instruction!
There are hence many ways and forms to Yoga, as there are many aspects of Vedanta (Hindu theology). Yoga itself is also stressed today as largely vyayama or exercise, which is specifically more Hatha Yoga, not the greater Yoga tradition itself, which was more based on Self-wisdom, Self-realisation and devotion.
Mantra-Yoga also forms an important aspect. Common mantras such as the “Hare Krishna” mantra have also effects with regards to the mind and biological constitutions, as do the deities. Breath energies are another science. Marmas or pressure points in Ayurveda are also another are activated via mantric, herbal and also breathing techniques. These all form parts of our integral Yoga or Ayurvedic Yoga practices.
Thus, we synthesise our Yoga with the most ancient of teachings, not just of one school or teacher alone. The works and teachings of Swami Shivananda, Sri Ramakrishna, Paramhansa Yogananda, Vedic Rishis, Sri Krishna, Rishi Yagyavalkya, Swami Ramdev, BKS Iyenger, Sri Aurobindo, Maharishi Dayanand Saraswati, Ramana Maharishi, Ganapati Muni etc. hence have an important place.
We look back to Sri Ramana Maharishi and Sri Ramakrishna and their approaches to bhakti and jnana Yoga traditions, as well as to a Vedic Yoga, presented by Maharishi Dayanand Saraswati of the Arya Samaj and more recently by Sri Auorbindo and Dr. David Frawley, of whom Durgadas is a student of in Ayurveda, Ayurvedic Yoga, Astrology and Vedic Sciences.
Durgadas has also had many years meditating on the texts, and many mantras and deities through spiritual practices and connecting to higher Cosmic Yoga-Gurus such as Sri Krishna, Maharishi Yagyavalkya (Babaji), Dattatreya and Lord Shiva, revealing deeper lost secrets of Yoga, Veda, Mantras and Ayurvedic Yoga. These insights are also revealed in his teachings.
As such, he has been given the title of “Yoga and Ayurveda Teacher” with 1200 hours of study and practise in the area, as well as “Veda Kovid”, a rare title as a Vedic Teacher, owing to his books, years of intense sadhana to the Goddess and Shiva, and research into the Vedic tradition, going back to the Rig Veda Samhita, the oldest of all texts on the planet!
In addition, as a Registered Ayurvedic Practitioner, qualified and trained especially in Kerala Clinical Ayurveda, Panchakarma Therapies, Ayurvedic Pharmacy, Ayurvedic Astrology etc., he brings in a synthesised and traditional approach.
If classifying a specific Yoga type, Durgadas’s Yoga would be a Tantric or Energetic Ayurvedic Yoga or Ayurvedic Psychological Yoga, but dealing with all facets of Yoga Therapy, including subtle methods related to spiritual practices, physical applications of the Asanas and Pranayamas or postures and breathing techniques for best health and well-being – but most of all, directed towards the goal of Yoga – Self-Realisation, through Self-knowledge and devotion!
